Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) Online / Hybrid
The primary focus of the Emergency Medical Responder is to initiate immediate lifesaving care to critical patients who access the emergency medical system. This individual possesses the basic knowledge and skills necessary to provide lifesaving interventions while awaiting additional EMS response and to assist higher level personnel at the scene and during transport. Emergency Medical Responders function as part of a comprehensive EMS response, under medical oversight. Emergency Medical Responders perform basic interventions with minimal equipment.
The Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) Program is based on the National Standard Curriculum core competencies and meets or exceeds minimum hours and content established by the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS). The Emergency Medical Responder course is an 80-hour of self-paced online didactic instruction that follows a lesson plan with weekly lecture and activity assignments the student completes using a home computer, textbook, and online supplemental material. The face-to-face portion and hands-on psychomotor skills instruction / written testing can be done during the course as it progresses or at the end. The online portion must be completed prior the final testing or Registry Exam.
Students successfully completing the EMR course are eligible for National Registry Cognitive Exam testing and certification through the Texas Department of State Health and Human Services (TDSHS) as an Emergency Medical Responder.
Prerequisites
The following prerequisites are required to be uploaded to all requirements to the coordinator complete your registration process before starting the course:
- Copy of Driver’s License or form of government or state issued identification (must be 18 years of age)
- Proof of a current healthcare provider CPR card like an American Heart Association BLS Provider or an American Red Cross Professional Rescuer CPR card
- High School Diploma or GED completion
- Once we have approved these prerequisites, you will be notified that you can start the course.

Online Course Requirements
Grading
All students must successfully complete the required 80 hours on-line didactic textbook assignments with a minimum passing score of 70% or greater prior to the first day of in person psychomotor instruction. All students must attend the in person psychomotor skills training and pass all written module chapter exams and the Emergency Medical Responder final exam with a 70% or greater. Students are allowed one (1) retest per exam to maintain a 70% or greater average.

In order to successfully complete this course, you should have access to computer equipment meeting the following system requirements:
- Recommended screen resolution: 1280 x 1024
- Minimum screen resolution: 1024 x 768
- Broadband or high speed internet
- Latest version of Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer or Safari web browsers
- Latest version of Flash
- Latest version of Adobe Reader
- Business casual for training activities and classroom sessions.
- A long sleeved shirt is required to participate in skills labs with the extricated car.

EMR Full Education Program Pathway
If you have just completed or are currently enrolled in a full EMR education program, and you are applying for Nationally Registry EMR certification, you must meet the following requirements:
- Successful completion of a state-approved Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) course that meets or exceeds the National Emergency Medical Services Education Standards for the Emergency Medical Responder.
- Candidates must have completed the course within the past two years and the course Program Director must verify successful course completion on the National Registry website.
- Have a current CPR-BLS for "Healthcare Provider" or equivalent credential.
- Successful completion of the National Registry EMR cognitive (knowledge) examination and a state approved psychomotor (skills) examination.
- Passed portions of the cognitive and psychomotor exam remain valid for 24 months provided all other other eligibility requirements are met.
- Some states integrate the EMR psychomotor exam into the EMR course. Candidates should contact their course instructor for guidance on their local psychomotor exam requirements.
Application Process
Follow these easy steps to apply for a National Registry exam:
- Create your account/log in to your profile.
- Create an application - Select the EMR level. Verify your personal information and make any necessary changes. Then, follow the prompts through the application process.
- Pay the application fee. The application fee is non-transferable and non refundable. This fee is charged for each attempt of the cognitive examination.
- Monitor the progress of your application from your “Certification Application Status” in case additional actions are needed. Once the National Registry approves your application and your status is “Ready to Test,” you can view your ATT letter and contact Pearson Vue to schedule your exam.
